Description

This widefield image is the beautiful Sadr Region in the constellation Cygnus, high overhead near zenith late at night this time of year in the northern hemisphere.

This long set of compiled monochrome data (15.75 hours) uses Hydrogen Alpha, Sulphur II, Oxygen III filters over many nights. Imaging an area of sky through different filters gives us the opportunity to create color images by assigning the signal from different narrowband filters to different channels.

The Sadr Region (also known as IC 1318 or the Gamma Cygni Nebula) is the diffuse emission nebula surrounding Sadr (37 γ Cygni), the bright star at the center of Cygnus's cross. The Sadr Region is one of the surrounding nebulous regions; others include the Butterfly Nebula (left of the star Sadr) and the Crescent Nebula (lower right). This area of sky contains many dark nebulae in addition to the emission diffuse nebulae.
